UNIX   A Multitasking Operating System developed in 1969. The are many variants of Unix. Written in the C Programming Language it is very portable - running on a number of different computers. Unix is the main operating system used by Internet host computers.
URL   Uniform Resource Locator - How documents on the WWW are referenced. The URL contains the protocol to be used e.g. HTTP
USENET   A worldwide system of discussion groups, with comments passed among hundreds of thousands of machines. Not all USENET machines are on the Internet, maybe half. USENET is completely decentralized, with over 10,000 discussion areas, called newsgroups.
UUENCODE   UNIX to Unix Encoding. A method for converting files from Binary to ASCII (text) so that they can be sent across the Internet via e-mail.
